Local SEO in Ireland: how to show up on Google in your area
A step-by-step guide to local SEO for Irish small businesses: Google Business Profile, reviews, Eircodes, local pages and Search Console.

When someone searches for a service with a place name, or just "near me", Google shows a map with a handful of businesses before any normal results. Getting into that list, and into the results below it, is what local SEO is about. The good news for small businesses is that most of it is free and within your control.
Here are the steps that make the biggest difference, in the order we'd tackle them.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important piece of local SEO. Claim it, verify it and then fill in everything:
- The right primary category. Choose the most specific one that describes your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
- Your address or service area. If customers come to you, show your address. If you travel to them, set the areas you cover instead.
- Opening hours, including bank holidays and special hours over Christmas.
- Photos of your premises, your team and your work. Add new ones from time to time.
- Your services and a link to your website.
2. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere
Google cross-checks your details across the web. Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, your Google profile, social media and directories such as Golden Pages or your local chamber of commerce. Include your Eircode, which makes your location unambiguous.
3. Ask for reviews, and answer them
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. Make it easy to leave one: Google gives you a short link to share by text or email after a job. Reply to every review, the good and the bad, politely and briefly. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them, as it breaks Google's rules and can get them removed.
4. Give each main service and area a proper page
A single "Services" page rarely ranks for everything. If you're a plumber covering Rathmines, Ranelagh and Rathgar, a page for each main service, and pages for the areas you genuinely serve, give Google something specific to show. Each page needs real, useful content. Copying the same text and swapping the town name doesn't work and can hurt you.
5. Make your location obvious on your site
Search engines need clear signals that you serve Ireland. A .ie domain helps, and so does showing your address with Eircode, an Irish phone number (+353) and the towns you cover. A .com works too, as long as these details are easy to find.
6. Make the site fast and easy to use on a phone
Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move. A page that loads slowly or is hard to use on a small screen loses people, and Google notices. Test your pages with PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues first, usually oversized images.
7. Connect Google Search Console
Google Search Console is free and shows how Google sees your site. Once it's set up:
- Submit your sitemap so Google finds every page.
- Check the Pages report for anything Google can't index.
- Look at the Performance report to see which searches bring people in, and which pages could do better.
How long does local SEO take?
Some changes, like completing your Google profile, can show results within weeks. Ranking pages for competitive searches usually takes months of steady work. Be wary of anyone who guarantees the top spot on Google: nobody can.
The short version
Complete your Google profile, keep your details consistent, collect reviews, build useful pages for your main services and areas, and keep the site fast. Do those well and you'll be ahead of most local competitors.
